This year I really want to finish my modern minis. There is not much more to do… paint a few Russians, US Army and Marines, do a few vehicles and I am done. Well at least until Eureka release some new minis or Imprint some new vehicles . Anyway, I tackled the Russians two weeks ago and here they are.

First up are some Russian tankers from Red Star. I already had some from Mongrel Miniatures, but these are far nicer.

Russian Dismounted Tankers
[Red Star Miniatures]

I kept these simple. No elaborate camo uniforms or anything. But many tankers I see in real life pictures do only wear simple one colour uniforms, so I let myself be inspired by these:

Russian Tankers

Up next are some Russians from Eureka. These come in NBC suits and would technically be most suited for the cold war era. But I fell in love with them, when I saw the first set at Historicon in 2005 and had to buy them, which also was the begining of a very good customer relationship with Eureka Miniatures. Since then I have mostly used them as lowly conscripts or troops for third line units. So these are the minis I already had (coming from the first and second releases):

Russian NBC troops
[Eureka Miniatures]

And these are the ones I painted the other week to beef them up:

Russian NBC DShK A³ Machinegun
[Eureka Miniatures]

The DShK 12,7mm machine gun is based on a 1938 Soviet machine gun and the equivalent to NATOs .50cal. This will give them some serious firepower. This one being mounted on an anti-aircraft tri-pod.

Russian NBC Mortars
[Eureka Miniatures]

Now these mortars should give the Russians some serious firepower. Mortars are quiet effective both in real life and under the rules we use. When playing games versus my Brits (who already had mortar minis) they had to suffer… now they can fight back in style.

Russian DShK and AGS 17
[Red Star Miniatures]

These minis are from Red Star, giving some heavy firepower to my other Russians. Another DShK, this time on a ground mount and an automatic grenade launcher.

Russian Kornet team
[Red Star Miniatures]

Russian Kornet team top view
[Red Star Miniatures]

And last but not least their Kornet AT team. I really like the Red Star minis for their animation, even though the face on the radioman is a bit flat. Recently read somewhere that the Chemins de feu (the club the owners of Red Star belong to) will be shifting to other periods, so maybe there will be no new Russian minis for a while. Would be a shame!

Before anyone asks the large bases for the heavy weapons and prone troops are from Fenris games.

Some of you might still remember last years post about my 12ème Cuirassiers. From the beginning they were plagued by some problems. At first my better half wanted to paint these, but real life intervened and prevented her from finding the time and doing more than the first steps on the horses. So I picked up and finished the unit. All nine minis. Then I decided that I would not be gaming at a 1:30 ratio but 1:20 and painted two more… only that I would have needed four more. Last weekend I finally managed to finish those last two remaining horses and troopers. They had been sitting on my painting table for months now, primed and good to go.

12ème Cuirassiers 5th stand

Unfortunately the problems still went on. Once I started painting them I realised that one horse (the one painted brown) was suffering from the usual Perry metal casting problems and was missing part of the lower leg (right front leg). I must have seen this when I cleaned the minis up. since I had removed all the flash on he stump. Not wanting to wait any longer I went for the quick fix and just added a drop of white glue and put it in the sun for 10 minutes. And it worked since one can not see the defect.

12ème Cuirassiers 5th stand rear view

Adding all up it took almost 3 years to finish this unit. I just hope they will not be plagued by as much bad luck on the tabletop! To finish this post up… here is a photo of the unit as a whole.

12ème Cuirassiers
group shot

Last Wednesday we played our second game of SAGA, again at Martins place. As you know I was able to finish my remaining minis in time, so we both played with our own minis this time. Both Warbands were the same as last time:

Martin played Normans. A mounted Warlord, three units of mounted knights (Hearthguard), two units of Sergeants (Warriors), one of them armed with crossbows and one unit of bow armed Peasants (Levies). Again Martin would divide his Peasants into two units.

I had my Warlord, Jarl Sigvaldi and his Jomsvikings (Hearthguard / Mercenaries), one unit of Berserkers (Hearthguard), two units of Hirdmen (Hearthguard) and one unit of Bondi (Warriors). Just like last time I would amalgamate both Hirdmen units into one large unit.

We played the #Battle at the ford” scenario. So we both had to have as many minis as possible on the opponents side of the river that cut the table in half by the end of the game (=end of turn seven).

Seen from the Viking side the table looked like this. On my right corner there was a Viking village with five houses, all behind a palisade and a slight hill. There were a large hill in the left corner and a small wood near the ford. As I said, the table was cut in half by a small river. It was impassable except for the ford in the middle of the table and a small bridge in front of the Viking village. There was a larger wood and some hedges on the left, a small hill in the middle and a field to the right, all on the far side of the river.

Deployment seen from Viking right

Deployment seen from Norman left

I deployed my Jomsviking mercenaries and Bondi on my right ready to take the bridge. On the road leading up to the ford were my Berserkers, Warlord and large unit of Hirdmen. Since three of Martins units and his Warlord were mounted, I expected them to make a rush for the ford, trying to get to the other side before I could seal it off. So I deployed my Jomsvikings and Berserkers to the front of their clusters, being the most capable on the offensive.

Jomsvikings and Bondi at the beginning of the game (right flank)

Martins Normans formed a long line. From (his) left to right there were the Sergeants, a unit of mounted Knights, the Sergeants with crossbows, his bow armed Peasants, two more units of mounted Knights with his Warlord and the other unit of bow armed Peasants.

Norman deployment

I won initiative and the first two rounds were spend moving our units forward.

Jomsvikings and Bondi advancing on the bridge

Normans advancing on the bridge

On the third round my Vikings advanced further still, but did not reach either the ford or bridge. But they were now in range of the Normand archers and crossbows. At the ford the Berserkers became the target of the Peasant archers, one of them being struck down. On the other flanks the crossbows wanted to fire at the Jomsvikings, but the gods prevented that (I love the Loki ability). They were activated once more earning them a fatigue marker and were able to fire this time, killing one of the Jomsvikings. But the knights made no real moves towards the crossings.

Beginning of round three seen from the Norman side

At the beginning of the next round the Normans were still out of reach for me, but I was able to move my units onto the bridge and into the ford, effectively sealing both off. Things did not look like I would be charged at the ford and the Normans seemed contend to just fire arrows at me over there. So the Hirdsmen and Warlord overtook the Berserkers. With their heavier armour they would be able to weather the storm of arrows far better. Which they did not loosing a single fighter to missiles till the end of the game.

Viking main body advancing on the ford
(This photo was taken a little earlier since all the Berserkers are still alive.)

The other flank saw more crossbow fire on my Jomsvikings. They were already fired up on their abilities in preparation of the fight to come and suffered no more losses. But then the were charged by the Norman knights. The fight was ferocious with the Normans getting help from the dice on the battleboard. But it was to no avail. Two knights died and the Jomsvikings just stood there on the bridge, not suffering any losses.

Viking blocking position

Since the Normans at the ford were still too far out for an effective charge and I did not want to blow my units on some lowly Levies, I decided to sit it out at the ford and assigned most of my SAGA dice to the units at the bridge, only reserving some to make them stronger vs. missile attacks.

So almost everything went into the other flank. My Jomsvikings charged the crossbows, killing 5 Sergeants at no loss of their own. Bondi were too far out for an attack and only moved to the far side of the bridge to seal it off.

Hold the bridge

The Bondi were then charged by the Sergeants. I suffered two killed and my Bondi were driven back onto the bridge. The knights took no part in the fighting there. The crossbows tried their luck on the Jomsvikings again, but were too few and even making use of my two fatigue counters killed none of my Mercenaries.

By the ford the Norman Warlord was still happy just firing at my Vikings, but with a little help of Asgard, failed to make an impression. Some of the Norman knights even drew back. :-/

Norman knights and warlord

Normans about to charge at the ford… or so it seems

Since the Normans had even pulled back by the Ford I now concentrated all my efforts (and SAGA dice) on the bridge. Now it was time for payback, Bondi style. They charged the Sergeants and locked them in two rounds of combat, killing three of them at the loss of only one and driving them back. The Jomsvikings turned away from the Crossbows and charged the remaining two Knights killing them at no loss.

Fighting it out at the bridge

Now the Normans finally began to move into position for an attack at the ford. And charge they did. First came the Norman Warlord accompanied by a unit of knights. Both sides made use of SAGA dice and in the end three Vikings died in the charge, but so did all four Knights, forcing the Warlord to withdraw.

Finally some fighting at the ford

Forward charged another unit of Knights. All splendid in their shiny chainmail, with banners flapping. But only one of them was able to leave alive and they had only killed two more Hirdmen. The Norman force at the ford was spend. Only the Warlord, a Knight and two six-men units of Peasant archer remained. No match for a Viking Warlord, three Hirdmen and three Berserkers.

On the other flank the there was some preparatory fire from the crossbows on the Jomsvikings, but again they failed to make an impression. Then the Sergeants charged the mercenaries, but only suffered losses and no gains. So by the bridge it was only three crossbows and three Sergeants versus three Bondi and three Jomsvikings. So they too had little hope of driving the Vikings back, much less making it to the other side.

With all the Vikings on the Norman side of the river and a force too spend to drive them back, the Normans called it a day early and withdrew.

Final charge of the Sergeants

All in all it was a good game. This time the Jomsvikings did not fail me, but they did so in a scary way. The worst I ever rolled when it came to their abilities was a nine, so they were always high on abilities. All in all they might even have been able to hold the right flank on their own. They were so powerful, that they distorted the game to a certain degree. The next one or two battles will show if they are so much of a force that they distort the game. If they are, I think I will only use them as normal Vikings to keep the game fun!

Earlier this year Warlord Games / Bolt Action Miniatures announced that they would be releasing some WWII Assault Engineers. I felt I needed them for various reason. Most of all since I wanted some minis to represent some crack Soviet units on my tabletop. The other reason that I actually have two scenarios that I want to play in due time that call for Assault Engineers. But I have to admit, that I ordered them with an uneasy feeling in my stomach. I do not like to many of the Bolt Action minis that were released over the past two to three years (those not sculpted by Paul Hicks) since they have extremely cartoonish faces. It was a pleasant surprise when these arrived. While some of the faces were still exaggerated, other were not. And those that were, looked more Asian or Mongolian then cartoonish, which was fine by me.

Soviet Assault Engineers (Picture © Zvezda)

To be honest, just saying that I was not disappointed by the faces like I had expected would not do these minis justice. IMHO these are the best minis from the Bolt Action line around and they proved to be a joy to paint. As I have said before, Soviet WWII uniforms leave me bored, so I did not put too much effort into the rest of them by just using washing techniques. From the moment I unpacked these, I felt they really deserved better, so they were painted in a classic way.

So let’s get started:

Soviet Assault Engineers (group shot)

Soviet Assault Engineer (NCO)

Soviet AssaultEngineer (DP LMG)

Soviet Assault Engineer (Flamethrower)

Now this mini with the flamethrower decided for me how to base the unit. I honestly would have loved to base them in an earth and grass style like I based my other Soviets, but he had some bricks and rubble between his feet. So I had to add some more to his base and all the others (which came with plain integral tabs). I usually do not like it when a company puts stuff like that on the tabs, forcing me mimic it with my basing, but in this case I think it added to the unit, so I am happy with it!

And to finish it all… another group shot:

Soviet Assault Engineers (group shot) 2

But these were not the only Soviets recently finished… I also did a 120mm mortar team. They were done with a simple washing technique though (again I am bored by the standard WWII Soviet uniforms). And I have to say I was slightly disappointed by these. Bolt Action put no new minis into this set, just recycling some of the artillery crews. To add a little variety I swapped the head of one of them with one I had left over from the Engineers. While these do not fit the Engineers in either quality or looks, I did not want to open a new post for them.

Following up on my post showing the first three points worth of SAGA Vikings… here are another three bringing the Warband to a full 6 points. Now these were a bit of a rush job. I did not expect to be playing another game of SAGA for another two weeks, so these guys were not on the first spot in the painting queue. When Martin contacted me late last week to ask if I was free to play today, that suddenly changed. Saturday morning only the metal minis (Warlord, casualty and the four Jomsvikings) had been cleaned and primed. The Bondi were still on their sprues (plastic minis) and needed cleaning, assembly, filling and priming before I could even begin to paint them together with the others. But come Sunday evening, they were all done.

Again… all the shields on these are freehand!

Viking Warlord Jarl Thorson

This is the Warlord for my warband, about to make a poor British peasant warrior pay with his life for even daring to oppose the Viking “shopping spree”. His name is actually a pun on my middle name.

Jarl Sigvaldi and the Jomsvikings

These are Jarl Sigvaldi (second from the right) and his Jomsvikings. They are not “real” Vikings under the SAGA rules but Mercenaries classed as Heathguard and cost two points. The photo is a bit poor since Sigvaldi is facing in a way that you can hardly make out the details on his tunics and the guy on the left is hidden by his shield. But I hope there will be plenty of better pictures from the upcoming games!

I will be looking forward to seeing how they actually do over the next couple of games. They failed me during our first game when they died like fleas without doing any real damage. This was in part due to me rolling poor, Martin rolling good and also me not giving them all the abilities they were due that round. For those who do not know them… in SAGA you sacrifice between one and three SAGA dice to activate them that round. For every SAGA die, you get to roll one D6 for their abilities that round (which are cumulative). To make sure I will not forget anything this time, I wrote up some cheat cards for them. I know that there are cards / tokens available for download on the Studio Tomahawk forum, but those only give you the abilities for every bracket and still require you to add everything up. My cards already give the cumulative results on each card. If you are interested in those cards… here they are for downloading:

Jarl Sigvaldi and the Jomsvikings (Tokens)

These are sized to fit into credit card sized laminating sleeves once cut up.

Bondi

Bondi

These eight minis form a unit of Bondi (Warriors) and presented me with a bit of a problem. Since they come from the same plastic set that I used for my Hirdmen and Berserkers, their looks are not really that different to set them apart. In the end I armed them only with spears, gave their clothes plainer colours and painted simpler shield designs.Hope this works!

And this is it… six points of Vikings finished for SAGA. Lets see how they do tonight!

I am a bit busy these days. Be it for work, looking over vast amounts of documents for my better half or getting my final 14 minis for my SAGA warband painted (we will have the next game on Wednesday). So much so, that I do not even find the time to take some pictures of those Soviet combat engineers I finished last weekend. So it is quiet nice, that I saw this when I checked out the Perry homepage today… Another metal workbench update:

Perry Austrian Hussars pre-view

These are Austrian Hussars and while I have no imediate need for them, I find them impressive none the less. I like the fact, that they are actually wearing the Pelisse instead of just wearing it over the shoulder. It makes the shoulder neck section of the minis look real nice!

Plus I like the fact that there is other cavalry in the pipeline. Hope they will add some Russian Cuirassiers to the workbench as well. They would make nice opponents for Eurekas Saxon Cuirassiers!

Once we are done with the Kursk scenarios from the SkirmishCampaigns we wanted to turn our attention to their Normandy ´44 – Monty´s Epsom book. Now I do not have any Brits ready, so I decided to get started on them in due time (I actually hope to have an infantry platoon, plus support and company HQ painted by the end of the month, with the armour next month). And here are the first. These men are meant to represent soldiers from the 1st South Lancashires. The choice for the 3rd (British) Infantry Division was easy. They landed on D-Day and took part in many of the major operations till the end of the war. So one can get a lot of mileage from them and for the other operations I will have to live with the wrong shoulder flashes. The choice for the 1st South Lancs was a bit more obscure, but their Landing Bach (Sword Beach: Queen White / Brèche d´Hermanville) is one of the two Commonwealth beaches that interest me the most to wargame (the other being Gold Beach: Jig). But I will go into more detail on the Lancs when I finish the next batch, have my good camera back and can show you the details of the shoulder flashes. So here are the first minis:

British WWII NCOs
(Left: 2x BAM, Right: WG / BAM)

British WWII NCOs
(Left: 3x VFM, Right: Art)

British WWII Medics
(Left: 2x BAM, Right: WG / BAM)

Now these are all pretty fast paint jobs. Unfortunately I feel that the British WWII uniforms by themselves are quiet boring, so I want to get them done fast. The shoulder flashes are freehand and since those are the things that I feel give them a little colour. So this is where I put some extra effort in.

The stretcher bearer on the last photo is wearing one of those leather vests. Right now all the minis are varnished matt, but I im wondering if I should give the vest a coat of satin gloss varnish to give it more of a leather look. What do you think?

British WWII Snipers
(BAM)

Now these snipers were actually done four or five years ago, when I was painting some Paras. Since they are wearing Denison Smocks, I decided to use them as a testbed for Denisons. If I did not like my first attempts, I would not have been forced to use my first try in the unit as all the good-looking Paras. But alas I liked my first try and painted the Paras the same way.

If you look close enough You can see the right eye of the standing sniper. The mini was a very clever sculpt in that the eye was the only part of his face to show!

Last summer I was on a business trip to Berlin and staying in a hotel on Alexanderplatz. Now my room was in the twenty-sometingth floor and offered a magnificent view to the north and east since there were no taller buildings in those directions. I had to get up early the next morning and was able to see the sun rise over Berlin from my room. And I could not help thinking how different this vista must have looked in early May 1945. OK, only birds would have the same vista since the building had not been build back then, but you know what I mean. The fire, the smoke, the explosions, tanks advancing over the wide avenues. It is strange how such a nice view can give you such strange thoughts if you are historically educated. And how much our lives have changed over the past 67 years.

What I was reminded of were the photographs by Sergey Larenkov. He took photos of Berlin in 2010 and combined them with photos taken by warphotographers (from the same spots and angles). I decded to share them with you on this day and here are his works:

So last Friday we played our first game of SAGA at Martins place. This was a bit of a last-minute choice, so I had made no further progress on my Viking warband and Martin was kind enough to borrow me some of his Vikings to fill the gaps in my force. So minis based on squares (both sides) are Martins, minis on round, snowy bases are mine (except for the dead lifestock).

Martin played Normans. A mounted Warlord, three units of mounted knights (Hearthguard), two units of Sergeants (Warriors), one of them armed with crossbows and one unit of bow armed Peasants (Levies). Martin would divide his Peasants into two units.

I had my Warlord, Jarl Sigvaldi and his Jomsvikings (Hearthguard / Mercenaries), one unit of Berserkers (Hearthguard), two units of Hirdmen (Hearthguard) and one unit of Bondi (Warriors). I would amalgamate both Hirdmen units into one large unit.

We played the Clash of the Warlords scenario meaning we would have to kill the other Warlord by the end of turn six to win. If neither had done so the game would be decided on points.

Seen from the Viking side the table looked like this. On my edge there was a Viking village with four houses in the middle and to the right, some of them reaching almost to the middle of the table. On the left had side there was alonghouse behind a pallisade. In the middle of the table there was a slight hill and to the left on the Norman side a small wood. Another small wood was in the right corner of the Norman side. [Please excuse the poor quality of the photos... I have borrowed the good camera away to my parents for a holiday.]

Table seen from the left (all units already set up)

Martin won the initiative and set up his Warlord in the middle of the table and his Peasant units about 1/3 to the left and 1/3 to the right of his deployment zone. Now I had to set up all mine. My Warlord started within the palisade together with the Berserkers. I was slightly unsure if he might need the protection with all those fast movers (=cavalry) and archers. The large unit of Hirdmen started right in front of the palisade gates. About 1/3 to the right of my deployment zone inside the village came my Warriors followed by Jarl and the Jomsvikings.

Vikings at set-up

Martin deployed his Crossbowmen in the centre of his deployment zone behind the hill and all units of Knights to the centre, behind the other units. His Sergeants set up on the far left behind the woods. This would later hamper their advance.

Normans at set-up

Martin won the first initiative and advanced all his units. Since none of them were in firing range this was about all that happened. I already threw caution to the wind and advanced both my Warlord and the Berserkers out of the battlements (I really hate tactics where I have to sit around and wait). They now stood in line with the Hirdmen. On the other flank my Warriors advanced in front of the Jomsviking Mercenaries. Since I expected to be in firing range next round I kept some of my dice on the battleboard.

In the second round the Normans advanced once more. The cavalry suffered somewhat from the fact that they had started to the rear. On the left one unit was wedged in between the woods and hill and behind the Peasants so the had to move over the hill. The other two units on the right hand side had to move to the flanks first. The Peasants on the right flank wanted to shoot on my Warriors, only to have the gods intervene (remember those dice I left on the board) and see their attack converted to a move. Lets stick with that flank for a while now.

Right Flank Round 2

My Warriors advanced to attack the now fatigued Peasants while the Jomsvikings oriented themselves to the flank to intercept the Norman knights. The later did not go as planned. While the Mercenaries were somewhat pumped up on abilities the Normans used one of their abilities to gain extra dice for the attack. Both of us had about a dozen dice. But the Jomsvikings only scored two hits, one of them Martin managed to safe. On the other hand I received eight hits and only managed to save two. The Jomsvikings were on their way to Valhalla, now. The Warriors lost interest in the Peasant archer and turned on the Knights. The first round of combat killed three of mine and two Knights. So the Warriors used one of the Viking abilities to initiate another round of combat before fatigue struck. This killed the remaining Knight at no loss of mine. But now the archers fired on them, killing one. The Warriors turned on them, but this combat only ended in a draw with each side loosing one man. By now the second unit of knights on the right flank had come into position and charged my Warriors, annihilating them at minor loss. So by the end of the firth round my right flank was no more. What had happened on the left flank in the meantime?

Left Flank Round 2

My units and the Warlord were on a steady advance, but the situation looked perilous. They had the Peasant archers to their front blocking the bottleneck between the hill and the woods, the Sergeants moving through the woods on their left and a unit of mounted knights moving over the hill to get into their rear, together with the Norman Warlord. Their first reaction was to take their Warlord in the middle to protect him, but then the Hirdmen charged ahead to attack the Peasant archers, killing all but one at no losses. Not that their situation had gotten any better. The Sergeants on the left had cleared the woods and were in a position to attack. The mounted knights and the enemy warlord had crossed the hill and were in their rear. Plus the crossbowmen who had first advanced up the hill had turned around and were now firing on my Hirdmen killing two. It was time for a pre-emptive strike. The Warlord had gotten sick of being nursed by his followers and charged the Sergeants ordering the Hirdmen to follow him. In the end they killed seven (all but one) of the Sergeants at the loss of only one Viking. At the same time the Berserkers charged the mounted Knights in their rear. It cost them three of their own, but they wiped out the Knights, which would prove important later on. The remaining Berserker charged the Norman Warlord, scoring three hits (which the Warlord all saved), but was stricken down as a reward.

Berserker vs Norman Warlord

Beginning of the last round

So at the beginning of the last round all that was left to me was my Warlord and five Hirdmen, all fatigued. I was trailing on points and could only hope for the Norman Warlord to attack me. Which he did not. He just sat there out of range for a single charge and ordered his remaining Sergeant to move out of range for another attack and the crossbos to fire on my Warlord (scoring only one hit which meant nothing to him). So I decided to put it all on one card. I only had three SAGA dice now and put them all on three activations for the Hirdmen. The first to rest them (remove the fatigue counter), the second to move closer to the enemy Warlord and the third to charge him (gathering a new fatigue marker before impact). Two of them died in the combat, but they also managed to score two hits. The Warlord managed to safe none and lost his life winning me the game. The rest is all Saga… err history!

Hirdmen vs Norman Warlord

All in all it went pretty smooth for a first game. Most important… it was great fun and we are looking forward to the next game. And I am really fired up to paint the rest of the warband to play with minis that are all mine the next time!

So this is the last instalment showcasing my Soviet forces. Let me start with a few words on them.

Now the paint jobs on these are pretty basic. I just blocked out the colours and washed them. Back when I painted them (roughly 4 years ago) there had been no big hype about the army painter, so I did it all with a homemade wash. One part dark brown paint, four to five parts water and one part PVA glue (I still use this to add shades to complex camo uniforms). So they are nothing special. On the other hand I painted these 160 minis (including the gun crews from two days ago) plus the tankers in just 1 1/2 weeks. Now on these photos you will see that they have a slight satin sheen to them. I honestly never cared too much about it, because they were only basic paint jobs. But when I was taking these photos I noticed slight paint chips on six of the minis. I repaired the damage and since I was varnishing today anyway varnished them right along. Now that they are matt they look far better since the contrast between the colours is stronger. So I just varnished the rest, too. Unfortunately the results can not be seen on these photos (since they were taken last weekend), but you will see it in the next game reports!

The minis shown here are all Victory Force (VFM), The Assault Group (TAG) and Bolt Action (BAM). All three ranges fit pretty well. Oddly enough the only scale creep is with the officers where TAG and some of the Bolt Action minis end up small and VFM large. What can I say about the ranges themselves?

Victory Force:

In general my favourite line for WWII. Researched to great detail, which also goes into the minis (for example you get the imprint on the belt buckles of German soldiers). The animation is good and anatomically correct. One of the great things about them is that some of the minis come with separate hands that allow you to give them all kinds of less usual equipment if you want. Their Soviets are one of the newer lines and lack heavier weapons like mortars or HMGs (although James Bland is working on the later right now), which is about the only drawback I can see.

The Assault Group:

Just like VFM they have only infantry. These were sculpted by Richard Ansell, so they are one of their better lines. The big drawback is the fact that you only have four different poses and the only variation is weapons or winter jackets. Back when I bought these they were cheap and allowed you to build a force quick and on a budged. Can not say if it is still that way, but I would not buy from them ever again anyway (I had to find that the owners lack even the most basic good manners and understanding of customer treatment, but that is another story).

Bolt Action:

Bolt Action or something of the opposite to the others. They have all kinds of heavy weapons and special troop types, but are a bit weak on the infantry (at least with the numbers needed for a Soviet force). Reading through the news from last month Salute, this should soon change soon with the addition of plastic Russians from Warlord Games (who now own BAM). The minis here were all sculpted by Paul Hicks when he still owned BAM and are his usual good quality, although some are his earlier works where I personally do not like all the faces.

What is still missing. One thing is snipers, but I intend to buy the pair from VFM once James finishes the Maxim and I can order them along. I finished the recently released Soviet Assault Pioneers from Warlord yesterday (guess what I varnished today) and there is still a 120mm mortar and some Naval Infantry to paint and I am good. So off to the photos:

Soviet officers

These are my five officers and commissars. The one on the left is VFM, the one on the right TAG and those in the middle BAM. As I said you can see scale creep here, since the VFM one is larger than the rest of his Soviets, the TAG smaller. At least you usually do not need 5 officers on the table.

Soviet NCOs

Far right VFM, the rest are BAM.

DP LMGs 1

All BAM. The team in the middle has been discontinued since it was way smaller than the rest of the range. I had to make the ammo belts longer. These sets were clearly meant for multi basing, but I prefer my skirmish minis based as singles. I would love it, if companies would make the belt longer for those who like to base their minis this way! Those who multibase them can cut them off in a second, while glueing a wire to the existing belt and sculpting one can take minutes (if you even have the experience).

Soviet Mortars

Left to right: 1x BAM, 1x VFM, 3x BAM, 1x VFM, Tubes are BAM. I felt that the VFM minis would work well as mortar crews and the teams were a bit weak with just two crew for the 82mm mortar anyway. Thanks to the separate hands this was done in an instant.

PTRS-41 AT-Rifle

A mix of VFM, TAG and BAM… no I am not going to list which minis are which!

Soviets with PPsh 41

Again all three manufacturers, but I guess this shows how good they actually mix.

Mostly TAG. The two in the greatcoats are BAM, as is the one looking to his right and down on the left of the picture. No VFM here.

These are all BAM. I wanted something special for them since Soviet Scouts are usually depicted in Amoeba Patter camo suits. So I went for the 1941 summer camouflage pattern.

And this is it. I shall post photos of the few remaining minis once they are presentable!
